cost of a gallon of gas, $3.54, three cents last than last week. but tonight oil prices on the move upwards because of egypt. rebecca jarvis is with us now. >> r economic toll at gas stations across america, prices rising as the violence in egypt escalates. it's scenes like this in egypt that make for this here at home. traders in new york watching and dissecting every headline coming out of the region. sending oil prices surging more than $10 in just six weeks since egypt's military forced president mohammed morsi out of power. tonight, prices well above $100 a barrel with that violence escalating. but the bigger threat to pump prices may be much closer to

home. with hurricane season just around the corner, a major storm in the gulf of mexico -- where nearly half of our gasoline is refined -- means we could be waiting until mid-fall for pump prices to stabilize. again, after multiple days of declines, americans paying more at the pump as they fill up and head out this weekend. david? >> rebecca thank you. tonight the stock market is now closed after the worst week of 2013. the dow lost 30 more points today, the second down week in a row. retailers including walmart reporting poor sales. the dow is still up near 2,000 points from just a year ago. two storms we've been watching all day. tropical depression erin in the atlantic, and another in the gulf. also watching the southeast, more rain after dangerous flooding there already. ginger zee tracking it all and she's with us here tonight. always great to have you. we were talking about this a

week ago, dangerous already here. >> right. the southeast has just been pounded. top five of their wettest julys on record for many states. numbers in atlanta that are topping some 18 inches above their average for the year. this weekend we have all of our eyes on one tropical low pressure system that many of the models taking it to texas. that would be much better. but if a piece of that moisture goes along the stationary front, i want to show you the numbers, this is what's going to happen. this is what's going to happen regardless because that stationary front dropping more and and potential flash flooding tallahassee up to raleigh. now a tropical depression, erin, is what we're talking about. let's look at the path. it stays out in the atlantic and keeps weakening. maybe a brush with bermuda, but we'll be watching. >> see you in the morning. thank you. to the west tonight and at least 11 states not getting rain but sorely in need of it.

dozens of wildfires still burning out west, including the beaver creek fire. the fire now covers 85 square miles. 800 homes were evacuated because of the flames. warnings that near record drought could lead to new fires. now to the study about the tornado back in may. "world news" has been following the town since the storm struck, especially the teachers and students at those two schools, including briar wood elementary school. >> i've seen the cellphone pictures of my son and all the other kids huddled down. >> you'll remember the video shot by the teacher, huddling in the path room as the students passed over them. tonight, we are happy to report this. >> it's the first day of school and we're back together!

[ cheers and applause ] >> the first day of school in a temporary building, of course, but all of them happy to be back together and cheering. we will be going back, keeping track of them throughout this school year, but champions in our book already. last night anderson seen in public for the first time since her rescue in idaho. attending a reception in her honor. tonight here new developments. new court documents explaining some of the horror. here's ryan owens now. >> reporter: on the same day kidnapping victim hannah anderson made her first public appearance since her ordeal -- at a fundraiser in southern california thursday -- authorities released more search warrants detailing what authorities found in james dimaggio os burnt home. they sdafrd letters from hannah in the home, but will not reveal the contents of either.

>> this was not a spur of the moment homicide/arson. this was well thought out. >> reporter: detectives found ammunition, an arson wire, incendiary devices. the documents also reveal investigators believe dimaggio set off two separate blazes. one in the house where the charred remains of hannah's 8-year-old brother, ethan, were found. and one in the garage, where firefighters discovered hannah's mother, christina, facedown under a tarp, next to a crow bar detectives suspect was the murder weapon. according to those same court documents, hannah and her alleged kidnapper, called each other approximately 13 times on the day she disappeared. investigators will not elaborate on those calls but insist hannah is nothing but a victim held against her will. >> thank you. did you know that bear season is just beginning? hikers in and near yellowstone national park know that after two separate attacks by grizzlies in the last 24 hours.

tonight the warnings from the experts who know these bears. here's abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: four hikers in yellowstone national park, charged by a mother bear, protecting her cub. two of the hikers were mauled, but all escaped alive. just 50 miles away in idaho, another attack. this time two park workers accidentally woke a sleeping grizzly. it attacked. both men are hospitalized tonight. it is bear season. when bears come out to bulk up before hibernation. in yosemite alone, bear encounters are up 64% from last year. but bears are also venturing closer to civilization. this furry thief stole an entire dumpster in colorado for a bear buffet. and here in hopchang, new jersey, police say they get around three calls a week from residents reporting black bears in their backyards. georgette machitto had an unwelcome visitor on sunday. >> he was on that hill right there. coming toward me. >> oh, my gosh. you were in your car?

>> i was in the car. >> reporter: if you find yourself near a back, back away slowly. but if the bear keeps coming? >> one of the biggest myths is play dead. don't do that. they eat dead animals. and if he gets close, just act as big as you can. >> reporter: that means stand tall, wave your arms and yell. this family filmed a bear climbing out of the front seat of their truck. to check out the back. cute to some, but also very dangerous. if a bear gets that close to your house, make a lot of noise, bang pots and pans together. if you're hiking, carry a can of this, it's bear spray, like a pepper spray or mace. it has a range of 30 feet. it's a lot better than nothing. >> they say don't play dead. act as big as you can. thanks. tonight we move on and expose the got father of all conspiracy theories, that

mystery in the nevada desert. area 51, the stuff of hollywood science fiction, is apparently real. here's abc's nick watt. >> reporter: for nearly 60 years the government denied this place even existed. sounds odd, but i'm gonna call it the most famous secret base in the world. an epicenter of alien intrigue. featured in "independence day." >> there is no area 51. >> that's not entirely true. >> reporter: even mulder and scully visited one dark night. >> area 51. >> classified experiments involving extraterrestrial technology. >> reporter: now, for the first time, the u.s. government has released cia documents showing a map of the secret base in the nevada desert with area 51 not redacted. dun, dun, dah! so this might be one step on the road to finding out really what has gone on there? >> yes. but i wouldn't expect it's ever
